Let’s Save Classical Music Together!

Public-service stations like Radio Kansas used to get a federal grant each year to serve local communities with meaningful programming. Tens of thousands of dollars we were told to count on for classical music were withdrawn for fiscal 2027.

One of the ways we hope to replace these lost funds is through increased giving from those 70 ½ and above through IRA Charitable Rollovers known as Qualified Charitable Distributions. This is a donation method that can save you taxes and maybe even lower your Medicare costs! Please contact the station at 1-800-723-4657 to talk to us about making such a donation, as it is critical that Radio Kansas is properly identified in the paperwork. Make sure your fund manager makes out the check to Radio Kansas, a Broadcast Service of Hutchinson Community College at 815 N Walnut, Suite 300, Hutchinson KS, 67501. Such checks are processed through the college’s Endowment Association, with an EIN of 48-0688389.

Will we lose classical tomorrow without your help today? Not tomorrow, but MOST public radio stations no longer offer any classical music because support from their communities just wasn’t enough. These federal cuts make classical an even more challenging choice.

Every dollar you give today ERASES some of that loss. Every dollar we come up short LOCKS IN the damage.

Adding confusion, the Kansas Department of Commerce just granted a half-million dollars for news stations to do more news. We received none of this grant. (And it couldn’t be used on classical, anyway!)

Here’s how we save classical music in central Kansas:

  • Make sure you’re a current member – too many folks are mistaken.
  • Don’t take this year off as a donor – be as faithful in support as you wish us to be faithful in service.
  • Adjust your gift by inflation. The ten dollars you started giving years ago may no longer have the impact you intend.
  • Help us focus on what’s important. Not every service, program and broadcast time is sustainable. Vote for what we should work hardest to preserve.
  • Recognize that only a direct gift to Radio Kansas helps – we’re not related to public TV. No matter how generous* you are with Channel 8 (or 9…or 11) nothing you give them supports classical on the radio.
